What can I do?
If you, a friend/co-worker is experiencing these symptoms call 911 ASAP! have the person sit down, and have them chew two 81mg or one standard adult dosing (325mg) of aspirin while waiting for EMS to arrive. Just a little heart attack!
What is the difference between a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest?
- A heart attack is a circulatory problem due to a obstruction or blockage of blood flow to the heart muscle. Think of your arteries as a garden hose, water is flowing through the hose watering the flowers and bringing them life. When there is no kinks in the hose the water flows at a steady pace – feeding the flowers. Once you put a kink in the hose, you are obstructing the flow of water through the garden hose causing less water to get past the kink resulting in your flowers to slowly starve. Now let’s put this story together. Your arteries feeding oxygen rich blood to your heart is like the garden hose, and the flowers are your heart. An obstruction in the arteries (garden house) is causing the heart to slowly starve of oxygen rich blood. Because this is a gradual process you will notice signs of a heart attack such as; uncomfortable chest pain or tightness, shortness of breath, discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)
Usually results from an electrical disturbance in the heart muscle, disrupting the pumping action of the heart and stopping blood flow to the brain, heart and the rest of the body. SCA happens within minutes causing loss of heart function, breathing, and consciousness. This is a medical emergency! If not treated immediately death can occur in less, then 5 minutes.
What can I do?
Call 911, start CPR immediately, and AED if available – continue till paramedic arrive. Sudden cardiac arrest!
